What is lower back muscle pain?

How does it occur?
Muscle pain in the lower back can occur due to various causes. We list the most common causes for you.
- Overuse. This is one of the most common causes. It can be caused by excessive lifting, heavy training or work-out or standing for long periods of time, for example.
- Wrong posture. An incorrect sitting position or a wrong posture while sleeping can lead to pain and tension in the lower back.
- Bruising. When you fall or hurt yourself, then bruising can occur in the back muscles that can cause stiffness.
- Whiplash. A sudden, wrong movement can cause a muscle tear, which feels like intense, acute pain. The tear can be as much as 1 to 3 centimetres deep.
- Chronic overuse. When you repeatedly strain the same muscles, chronic overuse can occur.
What can you do about it?
With lower back muscle pain, you can take the following measures to relieve the symptoms:
- Rest. Rest is incredibly important for proper recovery. But make sure you still keep moving lightly. Doing nothing at all is not the way to go.
- Warmth. Take a nice hot shower or use a cherry pit pillow on your back to reduce pain and muscle tension.
- Light exercise. Despite the pain, try to keep walking or swimming, for example. This promotes circulation and reduces pain.
- Stretching exercises. Stretching exercises can also help improve flexibility in the back.
- Posture. Having correct posture is incredibly important when you have muscle pain in the lower back. Pay attention to your posture while sitting, standing and lying down.
- Pain relief. If the pain is so severe that the above points do not help sufficiently. Then you may want to consider painkillers.
- Massage. A light massage of the painful muscles can stimulate circulation and relieve tension.
- Medical taping. Kinesiology tape is applied to your back by the physio and this takes pressure off your muscles. Connective tissue is manipulated and circulation to the lower back is improved, so you feel less pain and experience more support.
