Neck hernia and working at a computer
Nowadays, we sit at the computer or on a smartphone almost every day with the wrong posture. This usually goes well for a long time, but at some point we may develop neck pain. This, of course, is not good. In people who have a neck hernia, this pain will be even more severe. In this blog, we explain how best to work at the computer with a neck hernia.
What is a neck hernia?
A neck hernia is a bulge of the intervertebral disc in the cervical spine. When it presses against a nerve, there is radiation in the neck and arm. The most common causes of a neck hernia are: ageing, trauma, overuse and hereditary predisposition. The symptoms of a neck hernia can vary. For example, you may experience the following symptoms:
- Pain and stiffness in the neck
- Loss of strength in arms or hands
- Restricted movement of the neck
- Numbness or tingling in the shoulders, arms, hands or back
Tips for working at the computer with a neck hernia
There are several things you can do to cope with a neck hernia at the computer. For example, you can apply the following tips:
- Interrupt work behind a computer for a while every 45 to 60 minutes by standing or walking.
- Do some movement exercises with the neck and shoulders regularly to give them the necessary range of motion.
- Use a sit-stand desk so you can alternate sitting with standing.
- Hold your smartphone straight in front of you when you use it between uses. This allows you to keep your head straighter to your torso. This puts less strain on your neck.
- If stress is a determining factor in your symptoms, try to bring your body into a more relaxed state by doing relaxation exercises or walking.
