Lower back pain
Lower back pain refers to pain that occurs between the tailbone and the lower ribs. Pain in the lower back is a common complaint and can have several causes. Four out of five people experience it at some point. Are you curious to learn more about its causes and treatment? Then read on. We will explain it in more detail.
What is lower back pain?
Lower back pain is also known as lumbago or a back strain. In most cases, this pain is related to the muscles, ligaments, and joints in the back, which may temporarily be out of alignment. The pain can also radiate to the buttocks, pelvis, or legs.

The causes of lower back pain
Lower back pain can have several causes. It can be caused by:
- Stress
- Poor posture at work or in daily life
- Overstraining the lower back
- Long car rides
- Being overweight
- A back condition such as a herniated disc
- Pregnancy
- Aging
These causes can lead to temporary strain or misalignment of the muscles, joints, and/or ligaments in the back, resulting in pain in the lower back. The pain can develop gradually or appear suddenly. Some people experience lower back pain frequently, while others only occasionally.
Treatment
In most cases, lower back pain goes away on its own. It is recommended to stay active, as movement keeps the muscles, ligaments, and joints flexible. Wearing back support can also help reduce symptoms by providing support during daily activities. In addition, performing stability exercises to strengthen the core is advised. A strong core can help prevent the recurrence of symptoms.

Preventing lower back pain
When you are fit and relaxed, you are less likely to experience lower back pain. Make sure to stay in good physical condition by exercising regularly, staying active, and doing specific exercises. It is also important to frequently change your posture, especially at work. Sitting in the same position for too long can cause pain in the lower back. You can also adjust your workspace, for example by changing the height of your chair, desk, or computer. Finally, make sure to allow yourself enough relaxation and rest.
