Thorax Complaints (upper back pain)

Many people experience back problems at some point in their lives, to a greater or lesser extent. These are often lower back issues, but upper back pain or thoracic spine complaints are increasingly common as well. The upper back is also known as the thoracic spine. The thoracic region of the spine contains 12 vertebrae, which are connected to the ribs. Due to the structure of the thoracic spine, the ribs and the breastbone, there is relatively limited mobility in this part of the back.

Symptoms of upper back pain

Upper back pain often develops gradually and can present in different ways. Some people experience sharp, stabbing pain at a specific location in the upper back, while others report stiffness in the thoracic spine. Most people with upper back pain complain of discomfort low in the neck and between the shoulder blades. Twisting and stretching the back can feel difficult. Activities such as prolonged desk work or lifting heavy objects can cause upper back pain. This pain can also radiate to other areas, such as the chest, neck or arms.

Causes of thoracic spine complaints and upper back pain

The cause is often related to movement issues within the spine itself, where the spinal joints may not be functioning optimally. A prolonged poor working posture, repetitive movements and overhead work can all contribute. Stress can also play a role in both causing and maintaining upper back pain. Sometimes, the pain is due to acute strain in the upper back, such as from incorrect lifting or making a wrong movement. A back brace, shoulder brace or cervical collar can help provide relief.
