Capsular Impingement
The medial collateral ligament (MCL) is a stabilizer that resists sideways movement of the elbow. Instability in the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) is less common than instability in the medial ligament.
Symptoms of ligament injury in the elbow
In cases of overuse, such as during overhead sports, injury to this ligament can lead to instability. This may be experienced as a loss of control over elbow movements. The most common force involved is sideways pressure on the elbow, which often occurs during sports that involve throwing motions. Most people with lateral ligament injuries report symptoms like clicking, snapping, or locking of the elbow. Extending and rotating the elbow may also be painful.
Treatment of ligament injury in the elbow
An MRI scan and X-ray can help confirm the diagnosis of this condition. If the medial or lateral ligament is completely torn, surgery may be considered. If the ligament is not fully torn, a specialist such as a physical therapist can help treat the issue.
You may also choose to rehabilitate or prevent the condition altogether by using one of our supportive products. At Podobrace, we offer a range of elbow braces that can provide targeted support for this condition.
