Discopathy (intervertebral disc problems)
What is Discopathy?
Discopathy refers to the degeneration of an intervertebral disc. The intervertebral disc is a cartilage disc with a soft core, located between two vertebrae. Its main function is to allow the vertebrae to move smoothly in relation to one another.
As we age, all tissues in the body begin to deteriorate. In the spine, this presents as the drying out of one or more intervertebral discs — a condition known as discopathy. This leads to reduced stability in the back.
Symptoms of Discopathy
- Stiffness (especially when getting up in the morning)
- A feeling of instability
- Discomfort during static postures such as sitting or standing for long periods
- Pain (caused by nerve endings on the rear wall of the disc or due to nerve compression)
- Overuse symptoms in the lower back muscles
- Difficulty performing certain movements or tasks (such as bending backwards or lifting)
- Radiating pain or tingling down the leg or into the arms
