Chronic Instability
In this variant, the ligament is repeatedly overstretched, which can happen in occupations where the thumb is consistently strained in the same way.
Examples include construction or healthcare work. This can lead to an unstable joint. Over time, this can cause joint wear, resulting in pain and limited function. It may also be caused by congenital looseness of the ligaments or joints.
Thumb – treatment of chronic thumb instability
This is a condition that can be treated surgically. The goal of the surgery is to eliminate the instability and restore joint stability. To reconstruct the ligament, a tendon from the wrist is used. A small hole is drilled into the bone, through which the new tendon is inserted and secured. After the surgery, the thumb will be placed in a cast for several weeks. Following this, you may choose to wear a brace to aid recovery and prevent complications such as internal bleeding. Braces can also be used more generally to improve joint stability. At Podobrace, we offer a range of thumb braces that can provide support for this condition.
