Hamstring or quadriceps injury: what is it exactly?

A hamstring injury is a (partial) tear in the muscles or tendons of the hamstring group located at the back of the thigh. It’s one of the most common upper leg injuries. The hamstrings consist of three muscles that run from your sitting bone to the inner and outer sides of the knee.

A quadriceps injury, on the other hand, involves the largest and strongest muscle in the body. The quadriceps is a four-part muscle group located at the front of the thigh, stretching from the hip and upper thigh down to the top of the shinbone. An injury to this area is often accompanied by severe pain and tenderness.

What are the symptoms of a hamstring or quadriceps injury?

Hamstring and quadriceps injuries can be either acute or chronic. Acute injuries are usually marked by sudden and intense pain during activity. Chronic injuries develop over time and the pain tends to be milder but persistent.

Symptoms of a hamstring injury include:

  • Pain at the back of the thigh or inner knee
  • Increased pain when bending the knee
  • Bruising at the back of the thigh or inner knee
  • Stiffness and/or swelling in the back of the thigh
  • Sudden stabbing or cramping pain, similar to a "whiplash" sensation
  • A dent or abnormal swelling in the muscle above or below the affected area

Symptoms of a quadriceps injury include:

  • Pain at the front of the thigh
  • Increased pain when straightening the knee
  • Bruising at the front of the thigh
  • Stiffness and/or swelling in the front thigh muscles
  • Sudden stabbing pain, often accompanied by cramping
  • A dent or unusual swelling above or below the affected area

These types of injuries are especially common among athletes, particularly during sudden explosive movements or sprinting. They are frequently seen in sports like football, tennis, skating, athletics and hockey.
