What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a collection of symptoms caused by compression of the nerve that runs through the middle of the arm. This syndrome can cause pain in the palm and fingers. It may also lead to a loss of strength in the hand. The pain may also extend to the forearm, elbow, and shoulders.

What symptoms can occur?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a very painful and bothersome injury. It often develops due to frequent strain on the tendons.
This injury frequently occurs during pregnancy. It can also develop in people with previous wrist fractures or wrist abnormalities. In addition, it commonly affects people who perform repetitive tasks, such as office work or working at a checkout.

How is carpal tunnel syndrome diagnosed?

Your doctor will perform a physical examination to get to the root of the symptoms. This is followed by a muscle function test using an EMG (electromyography). This test detects any slowing of nerve conduction.
In some cases, additional testing is done via ultrasound to determine whether there is visible flattening of the nerve.

What treatments are available?

If you are diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome, your doctor will first recommend rest and advise you to wear a wrist brace.
An injection with corticosteroids may also be considered.
If these measures are not (sufficiently) effective, then surgery may be necessary.
